I’m Flattered by AZA’s Review

I’m flattered by the AZA’s review of the Christmas day tragedy, and by the Chronicle referring to the review as “praising” me. It should be noted that all staff that worked that night, not just the four that have been recognized did a phenomenal job! I’m proud to work at the San Francisco Zoo, with such amazing animals, and a truly hard working dedicated staff!

Zookeeper praised

The association’s report praised zookeeper Anthony Brown for quick thinking and fearless behavior, both at the big-cat grotto and at the Terrace Cafe. The brothers fled to the cafe after the tiger escaped and killed their friend, but Tatiana tracked them and attacked a second time.

A trained shooter, Brown was the first to find Sousa’s body, arriving with a 12-gauge shotgun after hearing a “Code 1 Tiger” call on the zoo’s radio. Although the teenager appeared to be dead, Brown still sought medical attention for him.

“Anthony Brown communicated concisely and clearly over the radio, providing the most rapid and safest response possible by the police department to the scene,” the report said.

Brown also guided the police to the cafe and directed an officer to shoot Tatiana in the head, the report states..
